Creating Effective Social Media Campaigns

I have a new article published today on Social Media Examiner, How to Design a Social Media Campaign. For this post, I’ve identified core elements of a campaign. And as I often do when I want to point to a business who exemplifies good social media efforts, I turned to Whole Foods Market.

I followed Whole Foods links, tweets. Watched Whole Foods videos. And quickly became intrigued by a campaign that they executed to help announce the opening of their new Whole Foods Market POPLAR store in Memphis. Able to access, Emily Lux, the social media manager, I reached out and interviewed her about how they approached the campaign in the planning stages to implementation.

There are many teachable moments from the Poplar store campaign. Check it out on SME!

Why 26?

I’ve come to see over the years that in an increasingly crowded social media content space it’s an added benefit to create and stay with a signature post. That is, if it continues to speak to readers.

small__4789649582For the past few years I’ve been writing articles about social media and developed a personal style, 26 Tips: An A-Z Guide, that has become my signature post on Social Media Examiner.

Last week while at Social Media Marketing World, #SMMW13, a woman introduced me to her colleague as Social Media Examiner’s “26 person.” The woman graciously shook my hand and immediately inquired, “Why 26?” Hmm, good question!

I’ve been writing these posts for so long that I had to stop and think a moment.

I realize this: blogging, like other types of writing, needs to have an organizing principle. Something that helps the writer structure the material in a meaningful way. Helps determine what to include and what to omit. What the writer wants to introduce, reinforce and help the reader take-away specific messages. And, a way to catch the reader’s attention from the get-go.

The way “26 Tips”works is that I come up with a topic for the article, one that I believe (and hope too to some degree) will be of relevance to a marketing audience, interested in learning more about various aspects of social media. (Some posts have been titled a variation e.g., 26 ways, elements– but the structure is always the same)

Then I make a list of words, from A-Z, that help categorize the tips I want to explore in the article. Some letters are tricker than others, e.g. X, Z, and that becomes part of the extra challenge, too.

I have to make a number of choices a long the way. For instance, in my last article, 26 Ways to Use Visuals in Your Social Media Marketing, the letter “V” would have been a perfect opportunity to discuss video but instead I chose, Visual Content Types, so that I could include comics and memes.

The 26 Tips articles have been well received and are one of my favorite articles to write. I’ve come to see over the years that in an increasingly crowded social media content space it’s an added benefit to create and stay with a signature post. That is, if it continues to speak to readers.

Do you have a signature article type? Or, a particular preference for one over another? Share your comments in the space below.

Social Media Marketing: An A-Z Guide

I started the 26 Tips Series on SME back in October of 2010, as a curated content post where I incorporate materials from many writers in the field. While researching and writing, there’s always a great amount of discovery and surprises along the way.

I have a new article published today on Social Media Examiner (SME), 26 Tips for Getting Started with Social Media Marketing, an A-Z Guide. You can read the full post on SME.

I for one, learn a lot while working on the articles, which in my opinion, is one of the added benefits of writing!

Posts and Other Summer Musings

The summer has been good so far! I’ve been busy blogging, connecting with new and familiar folks as sources for some of my posts, and when not working enjoying the long hours of sunlight and hot (sometimes muggy) New England days.

Probably most noticeable for me this summer is that I’ve been doing a lot of summer reading–both fiction and non-fiction. And for the most part, enjoying most of the books I’ve read. And even plowing through to the end of the ones that may not exactly hold my interest.

Two new posts which I’ve had the pleasure to write and contribute to this past week was one that was published on Social Media Examiner, 22 Top Blog Tools Loved by the Pros :

and the other, Innovation + Creativity = Great Experiences for Businesses on Instagram, published on GigCoin.

Hope your summer is going well! And that you’re enjoying some good down time, too,  hopefully peeling yourself away from being online. A goal which to be perfectly honest, I’m still working on–but I am a little better!

26 Tips, Again

Today, I have a new 26 Tips, A-Z Guide on Social Media Examiner.  This one focuses on the management of social media communities. As with all of the posts in my 26 Tips series, I thoroughly enjoyed the research, content curation and challenge of coming up with A-Z topics.

26 Tips: My Latest A-Z Social Media Guide & Other News

I’m pleased to have my 14th article on Social Media Examiner (SME) today!  If you’ve found your way here as a result of seeing the post on SME, welcome and thank you for visiting.

By Way of Background:
My first post was published on SME back on October 27, 2010 and since that time I’ve written a series of 26 tips, A-Z guides about Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn,blogs, lead generation, video, customer service, images, mobile apps, google+, pinterest, gamification, and now, location-based marketing.

I’ve been writing about social media for the past five years and have seen tremendous advances in that time. It’s always a challenge to keep up, but there’s something incredibly gratifying about continuing to learn something that feels very much like a moving target.

I also write regularly for GigCoin and you can check-out my latest post, How To: Extend Your Blogging Reach.

Other News:
This past week, I’ve also had the honor of being selected as a finalist in a short memoir contest on Biographile for my essay, Who Among Us. The contest is still going on and if you’re so inclined you can read the piece and vote for me by selecting the Facebook “like” widget on the page.

Non-fiction writing and memoir in particular has had a special place in my heart the past number of years, and I’m thrilled to have received recognition for this piece which is in memory of and a tribute to the ten women of the Tuesday, Writing for Wellness Group at Facing Cancer Together, who I had the distinct pleasure to know and write with.

I remember them.

The Gamification of Marketing

My blog post on gamification was published on Social Media Examiner today. The article covers “26 Elements of a Gamification Marketing Strategy.”  It’s pretty amazing when you stop and notice all the different places where brands and businesses are trying to engage you in playing a game. And probably what’s even more striking is how successful they are at it.

Check out the post to learn more about gamification. (BTW, the term didn’t roll off my tongue easily in the beginning either!)

Two for Two

I’m having a nice day today on the blogosphere with two new posts published, one on Social Media Examiner (SME) and the other on The Content Marketeer.

The 26 tips post is an A-Z guide providing assorted tips for writing great blog posts. The second post is an article about Dr. Patsi Krakoff and her experiences with content marketing. I enjoyed working on these posts immensely!

You can read the posts on their respective sites.
